Last week Marriott announced their purchase of Starwood at a cost of $12.2 billion. The deal is expected to close in mid 2016. If this transaction closes, Marriot will become the world's largest hotel company owning 27% of all hotels on the globe. Marriott would be the only hotel company to have more than 1 million rooms, ahead of Hilton. The Marriott group would own a total of 14,572 units - 11,641 hotel units and 2,931 timeshare units.
